Windows XP SP3 Update

There is an issue with Microsoft Windows XP SP3 that some users may have encountered recently when installing or running BarStock V1.0 on Windows XP.

The issue is a clash between Windows XP SP3 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 which is one of the main components used by BarStock V1.0.
We have now released BarStock V1.1 that now includes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 which should fix most issues.

However if you are experienceing any problems please read on to find out more...
This issue can manifest in one of three ways:

Installing Windows XP SP3

If you are running Microsoft Update and SP3 is being installed - you may recieve a message "Access Denied" or similar from the Microsoft Update installation program.

To handle this you must temporarily disable SQL Server to allow for the updates to complete:

  1. Go to Program Files/Microsoft SQL Server 2005/Configuration Tools/
  2. Start SQL Server Configuration Manager
  3. Click on SQL Server Services
  4. Click on the SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) service
  5. Right click and select Stop

Then start the Microsoft Update again and SP3 can be installed.

If you still get a Permission Denied message with SQL Server stoped, Microsoft suggest that you disable any Anti-Virus software (see KB949377 for details).

Installing BarStock on Windows XP SP3

If you have Windows XP SP3 installed on your machine, and are installing BarStock V1.0, you may have recieved a Fatal error message while it is installing SQL Server Express 2005.

The new BarStock V1.1 should fix this issue.
However - if you are a Pro user (i.e. you use a Windows Mobile device for data collection) please click here.
Otherwise please Install V1.1.

The previous work-around is to de-install XP SP3 and then install BarStock to see if this is the reason for the failure.
You can then Install XP SP3 later.

Please contact us if you are still having issues installing on you system.

Running BarStock after XP SP3 Update

If you have followed instructions above, normally BarStock will continue to run properly after the XP SP3 update.

If however, other changes to the system have been made in order to force installation of XP SP3, those changes may have unintentionally damaged the installation of SQL Server Express or BarStock.

In this case, we recommend you:

We apologise for any inconvenience, please contact us if you encounter any other issues.
